Book Review:

Students and physicians have been using anatomy and physiology texts by Ross and Wilson for more than 50 years. This latest 12th edition is an excellent opportunity. Illustrations have been revised, with new vivid electron micrographs and images that vibrantly carry learning to life. This describes the anatomy and roles of the body and the symptoms of the illness, with immersive multimedia exercises, animations and research aids to facilitate the learning process. There are pages on how the body treats food , water, digestion and the respiratory, intestinal, and urinary cycle processes and functions. It also deals with how the body defends itself against illness and injury, the immune system and evolution and reproduction. There are recent articles on the development and operation of body processes about the consequences of natural aging. The glossary has been extended, as have the tables for internet access, learning results and common values. This book is an outstanding value for money. "This book is targeted at undergraduates, which is as it says about anatomy which physiology in the introduction 'a straightforward approach.' This is vague, and suggestive of A-level text in sections. However, it surpasses itself in the drawings where the book does not offer in breadth of information. The nervous system chapter has outstanding detailed illustrations that only a beginner can grasp the plexus. This is the power of the book, which will be useful as a research resource for patients. Many chapters are fundamental to professional physiotherapists; for instance the musculoskeletal portion. The illustrations within this chapter are not adequately detailed which is not the case with other pages. I wonder if this is indicative of the experiences of the authors of nursing and biomedical research, since the physiology parts are written with faith. One thing that I was interested in was the book blurb citing "new parts on the effects of natural aging on body system development and work" (whether or not that was due to a birthday anniversary that I couldn't really reflect on), which was a surprise (the book wasn't the birthday). A short paragraph with bon terms like 'loss of teeth' at the end of each chapter can cause trouble chewing (pg 318) is not a 'section' or at least not a section worth promoting. The e-resources have to be weighed before this book is thrown into the reject bin. Any educational book worth its budget for marketing must include e-learning and this book is no exception. Let's be honest, grateful that it has. Simple to navigate, easy navigation and much more added to the book make the on-line resource amazing and relevant; as a research aid, a reference tool for you and patients. There are videos, drop-and-drag quizzes, case studies that make you wonder, "what material was in the text?," simple (and much more detailed) digital anatomy diagrams and all the text drawings you can save. Patient education options immediately are more open and instantaneous than casual searching via Web engines. "I wouldn't consider it. It looks good on the bookshelf, it has fantastic and simple illustrations, but I'd invest in something else at £ 32. Can I recommend that you use the e-learning resources?
