Book Reviews:

This book has been popular among medical students in India since it was published 35 years ago. Numerous new editions were subsequently created to keep up with the evolution and developments of Medical Microbiology. The 2013 edition is updated with recent advances in the subject, and many eminent scientists and microbiologists have contributed.

Others on Medical Mycology, Clinical Microbiology and a new chapter on Biomedical Waste Management are additional sections which add importance. The description of each chapter given along with a set of important questions is an especially useful feature. It provides encouragement to students studying for tests. The inclusion of clinical cases representing medical situations, where applicable, is of benefit in the realistic application of knowledge for both the staff and students.

Federal guidelines and strategies should be made known to medical graduates who work in India, either in primary care or in any field of specialization. The availability of recommendations from the Revised National Tuberculosis Plan (RNTCP), the National AIDS Control Organization (NACO), the Biomedical Waste Management Regulations of the Government of India and the awareness of new virus strains are of great value in this respect.

The subject matter is well arranged in addition to the material, using simple language and diagrams, color photographs, diagrammatic representations, tabular column data and supporting text algorithms.

Nevertheless, the exhaustive nature of scientific information is a matter of concern for undergraduate textbooks, written in India, and is of little interest to graduate students. It begs the question as to whether the book is meant for a graduate student or postgraduate. In a broader perspective, therefore, it is imperative that the faculty make discernible use of the volume of information available in this book while addressing graduate students, and that publishers and authors focus on content relevant to the practice of Clinical Microbiology for medical students and practitioners.
